Everybody knows Sterling Languages belief in clear, uncomplicated, functional communication is at the heart of everything we do.
However, we don’t believe in explaining confusing terminology, pedology, methodology or any other ology that distracts from our goal of clear communication, but what exactly is functional English?
Conventional language learning
The methodology most frequently used to learn languages is to memorise vocabulary and phrases, add some grammar to form sentences, learn multiple uses for the grammar, and finally practise, hopefully enough so that it becomes second nature whereby you can use it in various situations, if you remembered them well enough.
It is too complicated, it relies on learning everything to be able to select what we need. It doesn’t match the order of our thought processes and the result we want from our communication.
Turn it around
Functional language training is based on situations and the results we want to achieve. It asks us why are we communicating? And then uses the answer to guide us. We start with what what we want to achieve or do. How to help? Give advice? Persuade? etc.
Obviously functional language training is based on real life situations and results. Exactly where and what we need to communicate in, well, the real world. Perfect for work and play and usable in almost any context.
Use it or lose it is a the frequently heard mantra in language learning, we remember the things we do much more easily, it’s how our brains work. Functional language lets us learn what we need, and remember what we learn.
The functional approach gives us a much better insight into cultural semantics or the relationship between language and culture, which is a key factor in learning and retaining languages.
Put simply, Functional language training is using interaction, dialogue or conversation, in real life situations for real life purposes. It is perfect for use in business, work and employment and is more aligned to how we think and finally use communication.
